Wholesome Turkey-Shaped Cheese Ball with Easy Pretzel Feathers

  • Author: Sarah Wasserman
  • Total Time: 2 hours 20 minutes (includes chilling)
  • Yield: 12 servings 1x

Description

A fun and festive turkey-shaped cheeseball made with cream cheese, cheddar, and pretzel feathers. Perfect for Thanksgiving or Friendsgiving, this easy appetizer is a crowd-pleaser that looks as good as it tastes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 16 oz cream cheese, softened (two standard blocks)
  • 1 ½ cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper, freshly ground
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons fresh chives or green onions, finely chopped (optional)
  • 20–25 mini pretzel twists
  • 2 small candy eyes
  • 1 small carrot stick or red bell pepper strip
  • 1 whole almond or cashew (for beak)

Instructions

  1. Soften the cream cheese: Take it out of the fridge about 30 minutes before starting. You want it at room temperature. If in a hurry, microwave in 10-second bursts, but be careful not to melt it.
  2. Mix the cheese base: In a large mixing bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, shredded cheddar, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, pepper, Worcestershire sauce, and chopped chives. Use a hand mixer on medium speed until smooth and well combined. Scrape down the sides halfway through. Taste and adjust salt if needed.
  3. Shape the turkey body: Scoop the mixture onto a large piece of plastic wrap. Using the wrap to keep your hands clean, form it into a ball. Gently pinch one side to create a slight teardrop or pear shape—the wider end will be the turkey’s back, the narrower end the front/head. Wrap tightly and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or overnight.
  4. Prepare the pretzel feathers: While the cheese chills, lay out mini pretzel twists on a baking sheet. Arrange them in a fan pattern on your serving platter—about 4-5 rows, with the bottom row slightly overlapping the next. This is your turkey tail.
  5. Assemble the turkey: Remove the chilled cheeseball from the fridge. Unwrap carefully and place it on the platter, with the wider end resting against the pretzel feathers. The body should overlap the bottom of the pretzel rows slightly.
  6. Add the face: Press the candy eyes gently into the narrower end of the cheeseball. Insert the almond or cashew pointy-side-down for the beak. For the snood, stick the small carrot stick or red pepper strip just below the beak. Use a tiny dab of cream cheese as glue if needed.
  7. Final chill: Place the whole assembled turkey back in the fridge for 15-20 minutes to let everything set.

Notes

Chilling is crucial for the cheeseball to hold its shape. Wet your hands slightly when shaping to prevent sticking. For best results, make the cheese mixture the night before and chill overnight. Add pretzel feathers and face just before serving to keep pretzels crunchy.
