Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup (200g) light brown sugar, packed
- ½ cup (113g) unsalted butter, room temperature
- 1 cup (240ml) heavy cream
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- ½ cup (85g) toffee bits (e.g., Heath Bits ‘O Brickle)
- 4–5 medium apples, assorted varieties (e.g., Honeycrisp, Granny Smith, Fuji, Pink Lady)
- 1 cup (240ml) good quality caramel sauce
- ½ cup (60g) chopped pecans or walnuts, toasted
- ½ cup (85g) chocolate chips or chopped semi-sweet or dark chocolate
- ¼ cup (40g) dried cranberries or cherries
- Optional: pretzels, sliced pears, fresh figs, flaky sea salt
Instructions
- Make the toffee dip: In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine brown sugar, butter, and heavy cream. Stir constantly until butter is melted and sugar dissolves (3-4 minutes). Bring to a gentle simmer and cook for 2-3 minutes, stirring continuously, until mixture thickens slightly and coats the back of a spoon. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract, salt, and toffee bits. Pour into a serving bowl and let cool for about 10 minutes.
- Prepare the apples: Wash and dry apples. Core and slice into wedges about ¼-inch thick. Place slices in a bowl of cold water with a squeeze of lemon juice to prevent browning. Pat dry with a clean towel before arranging.
- Arrange the board: Place bowls of toffee dip and caramel sauce on a large cutting board or platter. Fan apple slices around the bowls in overlapping rows or clusters. Fill gaps with chopped nuts, chocolate chips, dried cranberries, and any optional add-ins.
- Final touches: Sprinkle flaky sea salt over the dips if desired. Garnish with fresh herbs like rosemary or mint sprigs. Let board sit at room temperature for 15 minutes before serving.
Notes
For best results, use a mix of tart and sweet apples. Toast nuts for extra flavor. The toffee dip can be made up to 3 days ahead and stored in the refrigerator. To keep apples from browning, toss slices in lemon water. The board is best enjoyed within 2-3 hours of assembly.
