Description
Golden, puffy sopapillas paired with a drizzle of warm honey butter make for an irresistible treat that’s quick and easy to prepare.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups (240g) all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- Pinch of salt
- 3/4 cup (180ml) warm water
- Vegetable oil for frying (about 2 inches deep)
- 1/4 cup (60g) softened butter
- 2 tablespoons honey
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine 2 cups (240g) of all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon of baking powder, and a pinch of salt. Gradually add 3/4 cup (180ml) of warm water, mixing until a dough forms.
- Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5 minutes until smooth and elastic. Cover with a damp towel and let it rest for 15 minutes.
- Divide the dough into two portions. Roll each portion into a large rectangle about 1/4-inch thick. Cut into squares or triangles.
- Heat 2 inches of vegetable oil in a deep frying pan to 375°F (190°C). Test the oil with a small piece of dough—it should sizzle and puff up within seconds.
- Carefully place a few pieces of dough into the hot oil. Fry for 1-2 minutes per side until golden and puffy. Use a slotted spoon to remove and drain on paper towels.
- In a small bowl, mix 1/4 cup (60g) of softened butter with 2 tablespoons of honey until smooth and creamy.
- Drizzle the warm sopapillas with honey butter and enjoy immediately!
Notes
Fry the sopapillas in small batches to maintain oil temperature. Serve immediately for the best texture and flavor.
