Description
This salted maple brown sugar cold brew concentrate is rich and smooth, with a perfect balance of sweet and salty. It’s a simple, make-ahead coffee concentrate that saves you money on coffee shop runs and tastes like a treat.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup (85g) coarse ground coffee
- 4 cups (946ml) cold filtered water
- ½ cup (100g) packed light brown sugar
- ¼ cup (60ml) pure maple syrup
- 1 teaspoon flaky sea salt (plus more for garnish)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
- Milk or cream of choice, for serving
Instructions
- Make the maple brown sugar syrup: In a small saucepan, combine the packed brown sugar, maple syrup, and ¼ cup of water. Heat over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the sugar dissolves completely (about 3-4 minutes). Do not let it boil vigorously—just a gentle simmer. Once dissolved, remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract and flaky sea salt. Set aside to cool slightly.
- Combine coffee and water: In a large jar or pitcher, add the coarse ground coffee. Pour in the 4 cups of cold filtered water. Stir gently with a wooden spoon to make sure all the grounds are saturated.
- Add the syrup: Pour the slightly cooled maple brown sugar syrup into the coffee and water mixture. Stir gently again to combine.
- Steep at room temperature: Cover the jar with a lid or plastic wrap. Let it steep at room temperature for 12 to 24 hours. 18 hours is ideal. Give it a gentle swirl halfway through if you remember.
- Strain the concentrate: After steeping, place a fine mesh strainer over a clean bowl or large measuring cup. Line it with cheesecloth if you have it. Pour the cold brew mixture through the strainer. Let it drain naturally—do not press on the grounds. This takes about 5-10 minutes.
- Bottle and store: Transfer the strained cold brew concentrate to your storage bottle or jar. You should have about 3 to 3½ cups of concentrate. Discard the coffee grounds.
- Chill completely: Refrigerate the concentrate for at least 2 hours before serving. It will keep in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.
Notes
For best results, use coarse ground coffee and steep at room temperature. Adding the syrup before steeping creates a more cohesive flavor. The concentrate can be stored in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. For a hot version, dilute with hot water at a 1:1 ratio.
