Crispy Spooky Mummy Hot Dogs

  • Author: Sarah Wasserman
  • Total Time: 30 minutes
  • Yield: 8 servings 1x

Description

These crispy mummy hot dogs are a fun and easy Halloween snack featuring flaky puff pastry wrapped around hot dogs with mustard eyes, perfect for kids and adults alike.

Ingredients

Scale
  • Hot dogs (regular or mini cocktail-sized, preferably all-beef)
  • Puff pastry sheets (store-bought frozen, e.g., Pepperidge Farm)
  • Yellow mustard (for eyes)
  • 1 large egg beaten with 1 tablespoon water (egg wash)
  • Optional: pinch of garlic powder or smoked paprika

Instructions

  1. Thaw the puff pastry sheets at room temperature for 20-30 minutes until pliable but still cool.
  2. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper.
  3. Cut regular-sized hot dogs in half; mini hot dogs can stay whole.
  4. Lightly flour your work surface and slice the puff pastry into 1/4-inch (6 mm) wide strips using a sharp knife or pizza cutter.
  5. Wrap the dough strips loosely around each hot dog piece, leaving a small gap for the face and overlapping strips slightly to mimic mummy bandages.
  6. Brush the wrapped hot dogs lightly with the egg wash for a shiny, golden finish.
  7. Dot two small mustard eyes on the exposed dough face area using a toothpick or knife tip.
  8. Place the mummies about 1 inch apart on the baking sheet and bake for 15-18 minutes until the pastry is puffed and golden brown.
  9. Let the mummy hot dogs rest for 5 minutes before serving to allow the dough to set and keep the filling juicy.

Notes

Keep the dough cold and work quickly to prevent stickiness. Don’t wrap dough too tightly to allow puffing. Use egg wash generously for a golden crust. Watch baking time closely to avoid burning. Let cool before serving for best texture. For gluten-free, use gluten-free puff pastry. Mustard eyes add tang and visual appeal; ketchup can be a substitute. Rotate baking sheet halfway for extra crispiness. Avoid air fryer as it may dry out the hot dogs.
