Creamy Homemade Ranch Dressing Recipe with Buttermilk and Fresh Dill

  • Author: Sarah Wasserman
  • Total Time: 37 minutes
  • Yield: About 1 cup (8 servings) 1x

Description

A fresh, tangy, and herbaceous ranch dressing made with real buttermilk and fresh dill, perfect for salads, dips, and grilled meats. This easy recipe uses simple ingredients and takes under 10 minutes to prepare.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise (120 ml)
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk (120 ml)
  • 1/4 cup sour cream (60 ml)
  • 2 tablespoons fresh dill, finely chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 tablespoon dried parsley
  • 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)
  • Freshly ground black pepper (to taste)

Instructions

  1. Finely chop about 2 tablespoons of fresh dill.
  2. In a mixing bowl, whisk together 1/2 cup mayonnaise, 1/2 cup buttermilk, and 1/4 cup sour cream until smooth and creamy.
  3. Stir in 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice.
  4. Add 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder, 1/2 teaspoon onion powder, 1 tablespoon dried parsley, and the chopped fresh dill. Whisk until evenly combined.
  5. Season with 1/2 teaspoon salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste. Whisk and adjust seasoning as needed.
  6. Transfer the dressing to an airtight container or jar and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to allow flavors to meld.
  7. Before serving, stir or shake the dressing. If too thick, whisk in 1-2 tablespoons of buttermilk to loosen.

Notes

Chill the dressing for at least 30 minutes or overnight for best flavor. Adjust thickness by adding more buttermilk for a thinner dressing or more mayonnaise/sour cream for a thicker dip. Use fresh dill for best flavor; if using dried dill, reduce quantity by half. Avoid pre-mixed ranch seasoning for fresher taste.
