Cozy Slow Cooker Peppermint Mocha Hot Chocolate

  • Author: Sarah Wasserman
  • Total Time: 2 hours 10 minutes
  • Yield: 8 servings 1x

Description

This slow cooker peppermint mocha hot chocolate is rich, creamy, and infused with the perfect balance of chocolate, peppermint, and coffee. It’s a cozy, set-it-and-forget-it drink that’s perfect for holiday gatherings or quiet winter evenings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 ½ cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon peppermint extract
  • 1 cup strongly brewed coffee (or 2 tablespoons instant espresso powder dissolved in 1 cup hot water)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • For serving (optional): whipped cream, crushed candy canes or peppermint candies, chocolate shavings or cocoa powder

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, whisk together the cocoa powder, sugar, and salt to prevent lumps.
  2. Pour the whole milk and heavy cream into a 6-quart slow cooker. Stir briefly.
  3. Add the cocoa-sugar mixture to the slow cooker and whisk until smooth, ensuring no dry patches remain.
  4. Sprinkle the chocolate chips over the top, then pour in the brewed coffee. Do not stir yet.
  5. Cover and cook on low for 2 hours.
  6. After 2 hours, uncover and whisk everything together until smooth. Stir in the peppermint extract and vanilla extract. Taste and adjust sweetness or peppermint as desired.
  7. Switch the slow cooker to the ‘warm’ setting to keep the hot chocolate warm for serving.
  8. Ladle into mugs and top with whipped cream, crushed candy canes, and chocolate shavings if desired.

Notes

Do not cook on high to avoid scorching the milk. Start with less peppermint extract and adjust to taste. For a dairy-free version, use full-fat oat milk and dairy-free chocolate chips. The hot chocolate can be stored in the fridge for up to 5 days and reheated gently.
