Cozy Homemade Eggnog with Bourbon & Fresh Nutmeg

  • Author: Sarah Wasserman
  • Total Time: 2 hours 5 minutes (includes chilling)
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Description

This quick and easy eggnog uses a blender for a perfectly emulsified, creamy texture without stovetop tempering. Rich, spiced, and warm from bourbon, it’s a holiday favorite that comes together in under 10 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 large eggs, at room temperature
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup bourbon (e.g., Buffalo Trace or Maker’s Mark)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 whole nutmeg, for grating
  • For the topping (optional):
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream, whipped to soft peaks
  • Freshly grated nutmeg, for garnish
  • Cinnamon sticks, for stirring

Instructions

  1. Combine eggs and sugar in the blender. Pulse a few times until eggs are broken up and sugar is mostly dissolved (about 10 seconds).
  2. Add bourbon and blend on medium speed for 20 seconds until mixture thickens slightly.
  3. Add milk, heavy cream, vanilla extract, cinnamon, cloves, salt, and freshly grated nutmeg (about 1/2 teaspoon). Blend on low speed for 15 seconds until combined.
  4. Taste and adjust sweetness or spices as desired.
  5. Strain through a fine-mesh strainer into a pitcher or bowl (optional but recommended for silky texture).
  6. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, preferably overnight.
  7. Just before serving, whip 1/2 cup heavy cream to soft peaks.
  8. Pour chilled eggnog into cups, top with whipped cream, grate fresh nutmeg over the top, and add a cinnamon stick if desired.

Notes

Room temperature eggs blend more smoothly. Don’t over-blend to avoid a frothy texture. Chilling is crucial for flavor melding. Fresh nutmeg is non-negotiable for best flavor. Eggnog keeps up to 5 days in the fridge and improves after 24 hours. For a non-alcoholic version, omit bourbon and add 1/2 cup extra milk or a splash of vanilla.
