Best Blood Orange Margarita with Black Salt Rim

  • Author: Sarah Wasserman
  • Total Time: 5 minutes
  • Yield: 1 serving 1x

Description

A stunningly simple yet visually unforgettable cocktail featuring the deep, berry-like sweetness of blood orange, smooth reposado tequila, and a dramatic black salt rim. Perfect for a festive dinner party or a quiet night in.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 23 medium blood oranges (about 2 oz / 60 ml juice)
  • 2 oz (60 ml) reposado tequila
  • 1 oz (30 ml) fresh lime juice
  • 1 oz (30 ml) triple sec or Cointreau
  • ½ oz (15 ml) agave syrup (optional, to taste)
  • Black lava salt (for rim)
  • Ice (preferably large cubes or a single sphere)

Instructions

  1. Prep your glass: Run a lime wedge around the rim of a rocks glass. Pour a thin, even layer of black lava salt onto a small plate. Gently twist the rim of the glass in the salt to coat evenly. Set aside.
  2. Juice the citrus: Roll blood oranges and lime firmly on the countertop. Cut in half and juice. Strain 2 oz (60 ml) blood orange juice and 1 oz (30 ml) lime juice through a fine-mesh strainer into a cocktail shaker.
  3. Combine liquids: Add 2 oz (60 ml) reposado tequila and 1 oz (30 ml) triple sec or Cointreau to the shaker. If desired, add ½ oz (15 ml) agave syrup.
  4. Shake: Fill the shaker two-thirds full with ice. Secure lid and shake vigorously for 15-20 seconds until the shaker is frosty.
  5. Strain and serve: Fill the prepared glass with fresh ice. Strain the margarita into the glass.
  6. Garnish: Add a thin slice of blood orange to the rim. Optionally, add a small sprig of fresh rosemary or an edible flower.
  7. Taste and adjust: Take a small sip. Adjust with more lime juice if too sweet, or more agave if too tart.

Notes

Use large ice cubes or a single sphere to minimize dilution. Only salt the outside of the rim to avoid a salty drink. For a party, combine all liquid ingredients (except ice) in a pitcher and refrigerate up to 24 hours; shake individual portions with ice when ready to serve.
