  • 1 cup (227g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups (300g) granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup (120ml) whole milk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup (25g) cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×5-inch loaf pan and line it with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, cream 1 cup (227g) of unsalted butter and 1 1/2 cups (300g) of granulated sugar until light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes.
  3. Beat in 4 large eggs, one at a time, ensuring each is fully incorporated before adding the next. Mix in 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together 2 cups (240g) of all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon of baking powder, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with 1/2 cup (120ml) of milk. Start and end with the dry ingredients for a smooth batter.
  6. Divide the batter in half. To one half, add 1/4 cup (25g) of sifted cocoa powder and mix until fully combined.
  7. Pour half of the vanilla batter into the loaf pan, followed by dollops of chocolate batter. Repeat with the remaining batters. Use a knife or skewer to gently swirl the two batters together.
  8. Bake for 55-60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

For perfect swirls, use gentle figure-eight motions with a knife or skewer. Tent the cake with foil if the top browns too quickly during baking.
