Description

A bold twist on the classic sloppy joe, this Cajun Chicken Sloppy Joes recipe is bursting with spice, smokiness, and just the right hint of sweetness. Perfect for breakfast, lunch, or dinner!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground chicken
  • 2 teaspoons Cajun seasoning
  • 1 red bell pepper, diced
  • 1 green bell pepper, diced
  • 1 yellow onion, diced
  • 1 cup tomato sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 6 hamburger buns (brioche or pretzel buns optional)

Instructions

  1. Dice your bell peppers and onions, and measure out your spices and sauce ingredients.
  2. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add a tablespoon of oil, then cook the ground chicken until browned, breaking it up as it cooks (about 7–8 minutes).
  3. Push the chicken to one side of the skillet and add the diced onions and bell peppers. Cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
  4. Sprinkle the Cajun seasoning over the chicken and vegetables. Stir until everything is evenly coated.
  5. Reduce the heat to medium, then stir in the tomato sauce, brown sugar, and Worcestershire sauce. Let it simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  6. If desired, toast the hamburger buns in a toaster or oven for a few minutes until lightly golden.
  7. Spoon the Cajun chicken mixture onto the buns. Serve warm and enjoy!

Notes

For extra heat, add more cayenne pepper or a splash of hot sauce. The filling can be made ahead of time and reheated when ready to serve. If the mixture seems too dry, add a splash of water or chicken broth while simmering.
