Description
This Overnight Croissant Breakfast Casserole combines buttery croissants, creamy eggs, and gooey cheese into a crowd-pleasing dish that’s perfect for holiday brunches or special mornings.
Ingredients
Scale
- 6–8 large croissants, preferably day-old
- 8 large eggs
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- Pinch of nutmeg
- 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- 1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese
- Optional: sautéed vegetables (spinach, mushrooms, bell peppers)
- Optional: cooked meats (ham, bacon, sausage)
Instructions
- Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or cooking spray.
- Cut the croissants into bite-sized pieces and layer them evenly in the dish.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, heavy cream, salt, black pepper, and nutmeg.
- Stir in shredded cheddar cheese and Gruyère cheese.
- If adding vegetables or meat, sauté them first and layer them over the croissants.
- Pour the egg mixture evenly over the croissants and toppings, ensuring all pieces are soaked.
- Cover the dish with foil and refrigerate overnight (at least 6 hours).
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the casserole covered for 30 minutes.
- Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until golden and set.
- Let the casserole cool for 5 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh parsley or chives, if desired.
Notes
For best results, use day-old croissants to absorb the custard mixture fully. Customize with your favorite vegetables, meats, or cheeses. Ensure vegetables are sautéed to avoid excess moisture.
